8 Arrested as NYC Protest Erupts Over ICE Detention at Brooklyn Hospital

On a tense Saturday night in Brooklyn, New York, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian national, at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) alleges Okeke, who reportedly overstayed his tourist visa since February 26, 2024, "weaponized his vehicle" in an attempt to hit ICE officers and physically resisted arrest. He was subsequently taken to the hospital for medical evaluation.

Outside the hospital, a group of protesters rallied against the ICE operation, blocking entrances and obstructing traffic. According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the situation escalated as one protester punched and shattered the rear window of an ICE vehicle. Despite repeated verbal warnings to disperse, the crowd refused, prompting police to arrest eight individuals on charges including resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief. A ninth person received a summons and was released.

The NYPD emphasized that it does not participate in civil immigration enforcement and had no prior knowledge or coordination with ICE regarding the arrest. Multiple ICE vehicles were damaged during the protest, and several ICE officers sustained minor injuries in the scuffle.

This incident highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding ICE operations in New York City, where community resistance against immigration enforcement continues to challenge the agency’s tactics and the broader immigration detention system. The arrests and confrontations underscore the fraught relationship between law enforcement, ICE, and immigrant communities, especially as ICE expands its presence in medical facilities and public spaces.
