ABC Pushes Back Against FCC’s Political Witch Hunt Targeting ‘The View’

ABC is calling out the FCC and its Trump-loyal chair Brendan Carr for weaponizing the equal-time rule to intimidate and silence political talk shows like ‘The View.’ This probe is a clear attack on free speech disguised as regulatory enforcement, part of a broader GOP effort to chill critical voices ahead of key elections.

ABC Pushes Back Against FCC’s Political Witch Hunt Targeting ‘The View’

ABC has officially had enough of the Federal Communications Commission’s politically motivated probe into its daytime talk show ‘The View.’ The network filed a formal petition this week accusing the FCC, led by Brendan Carr—a staunch Trump loyalist and contributor to the authoritarian Project 2025 blueprint—of violating the First Amendment by targeting the show under the guise of enforcing the so-called equal-time rule.

This investigation centers on whether ‘The View’ breached FCC rules requiring broadcasters to give equal airtime to political candidates. The trigger was an appearance by Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico in February, who is seen as a serious threat to Texas Republicans. The FCC’s probe follows a recent rule change in January that stripped talk shows of their longstanding exemption from this rule, opening the door to aggressive crackdowns.

ABC’s petition argues that this is not just about one program but a dangerous precedent that threatens decades of settled law protecting political speech on news and talk shows. The network accuses the FCC of “threaten[ing] to upend decades of settled law and practice and chill critical protected speech,” highlighting the broader implications for media freedom.

This attack is part of a pattern under the Trump administration and its allies to weaponize government agencies against critical media voices. Earlier, the FCC under Carr made mafia-style threats against Jimmy Kimmel, and the White House has openly threatened to take ‘The View’ off the air. Despite ABC’s controversial multimillion-dollar settlement with Trump before his second inauguration—a move seen by many as bowing to pressure—the network is still facing relentless harassment.

The equal-time rule historically exempted genuine news programs from these requirements. In 2006, the FCC allowed talk shows like Jay Leno’s ‘Tonight Show’ to count as news interviews, preserving a broad space for political discourse. The recent rollback and aggressive enforcement signal a chilling crackdown on dissenting voices ahead of critical elections.

ABC’s fight is about more than just ‘The View.’ It’s a battle for the future of free speech and a free press in an era when authoritarian forces are using regulatory tools to silence opposition and manipulate public discourse. We will be watching closely as this battle unfolds.
