Activists Rally to Oust Mary Miller, Trump’s Congressional Enabler in Illinois

Thousands gathered in Edwardsville to demand an end to Mary Miller’s tenure as a Trump loyalist who fails to serve her district. Protesters link Miller’s record to broader attacks on democracy and minority communities, calling for a blue wave in the upcoming midterms.

Edwardsville, Illinois saw a powerful demonstration as roughly 1,700 locals lined the sidewalks from City Park outward, joining a nationwide movement that has already mobilized some 8 million protesters in over 3,300 events. The message was clear: vote Mary Miller out of office.

Miller, a staunch Trump supporter and representative of Illinois’ largely rural 15th Congressional District, has become a symbol of congressional enablers who prioritize loyalty to a “want-to-be king” over the needs of their constituents. Activists at the rally criticized Miller for weakly delivering federal funds to her district and for aligning with policies that harm immigrant, LGBTQ, and minority communities.

Anna Marie Bell, a protester, framed the fight as a defense of the U.S. Constitution itself, warning that the founding principles are being shredded by authoritarian impulses from the Trump administration and its allies. “We’ll not only protect our Constitution from a want-to-be king, but demand it be strengthened to guarantee everyone the promise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” Bell said.

Josh Woodson, another activist, highlighted the hypocrisy of Trump’s campaign promises. “The only promise Trump has kept is bringing hardship upon our immigrant, LGBTQ, and minority communities,” Woodson said. He pointed out that Trump’s pledges like “no new wars” and “release the Epstein files” have been twisted into calls for more conflict and secrecy.

The protest is more than anti-Trump or anti-Republican — it’s a grassroots movement to build community and mutual aid, according to Andi Smith, who founded Edwardsville’s weekly protests now in their 80th week. Smith emphasized the broader goals of the movement: ensuring no one goes hungry, securing healthcare for all, and demanding a living wage in a country capable of providing these basic rights.

With the midterms approaching, activists see the defeat of Mary Miller as a crucial step toward flipping the House blue and pushing back against authoritarian overreach and corruption. The “No Kings” protests are not just about stopping a president — they are about reclaiming democracy and accountability at every level of government.
