After Five Months in ICE Detention, Allan Marrero Walks Free and Reunites with Husband
Allan Marrero, detained by ICE for five months despite pursuing permanent residency, has finally been released and reunited with his husband. His harrowing ordeal highlights the brutal, often arbitrary nature of immigration enforcement under the Trump administration, where even those trying to comply with the law face dehumanizing treatment and prolonged detention.
Allan Marrero, a Cayman Islands native and New York resident, endured five months behind bars in ICE detention centers after being swept up during a routine green-card interview last November. Despite actively working toward permanent residency, Marrero was branded an “illegal alien” by the Department of Homeland Security, accused of overstaying his visa and missing a court hearing—an absence caused by his participation in an alcohol rehabilitation program.
His detention was marked by a litany of abuses. Advocates report Marrero was denied essential prescription medication and subjected to relentless pressure from ICE agents to self-deport. His journey through the detention system was a grim tour of notorious facilities, including the so-called “Alligator Alcatraz” in Florida, before ending up in Mississippi.
The legal battles to secure his release were fraught with setbacks. Although a judge ordered his release in January, DHS imposed a stay, prolonging his imprisonment. A subsequent judge then denied bail altogether. Meanwhile, Marrero’s husband, Matthew, described the experience as a kidnapping, lamenting the cruel overreach of immigration authorities targeting people “trying to do the right thing” rather than criminals.
On Sunday, Marrero and his husband publicly thanked their community at Middle Church in Manhattan’s East Village, sharing the trauma of their ordeal and the difficult road to readjustment. Marrero’s sister-in-law organized a GoFundMe campaign to cover legal fees and expenses, underscoring the financial toll such detentions impose on families.
This case is a stark example of the Trump administration’s harsh immigration enforcement policies that tear families apart and punish immigrants who are often complying with the law. Marrero’s call to action is clear: while he is fortunate to be free, many remain detained under brutal conditions. Their voices must not be forgotten.
We stand with Allan Marrero and countless others caught in this cruel system. Their fight for dignity and justice is far from over.
