After RFK Jr. Made Some...Interesting...Comments About Dunkin', Fans Of The Chain Are Ready To Riot

Some comments that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made last week are making quite a stir in New England.

Speaking at an "Eat Real Food" rally in Austin, Texas, Kennedy spoke about closing a loophole that allowed certain unstudied ingredients to be used in American food.

In a nutshell, the Food and Drug Administration has a category of ingredients called "GRAS," aka generally recognized as safe. These ingredients don't require further study to be added to food. Originally, GRAS was meant to apply to widely used ingredients like baking soda, but a loophole eventually allowed the category to be expanded to include things like trans fats.

At the event, Kennedy said, "Now we've closed the loophole so that any new ingredient has to go through an approval process and has to have proof of safety. We're also going back and making all of those companies show the data that they relied on."

Next, he uttered the words that have the state of Massachusetts, in particular, ready to revolt. "And we're going to ask Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks, show us the safety data that show that it's okay for a teenage girl to drink an iced coffee with 115 grams of sugar in it. I don't think they're going to be able to do it."

In case you're curious, a typical iced coffee from Dunkin' doesn't have 115 grams of sugar. The only drinks on the chain's menu that do are the blended frozen chocolate and frozen coffee beverages.

After the Boston Globe shared RFK Jr.'s comments, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey responded decisively:
