America’s Democracy Has Already Disappeared, Study Warns

The United States is no longer a liberal democracy, according to a new report from the V-Dem Institute, which ranks the country as an “electoral democracy” due to rampant executive overreach under Donald Trump. From voter suppression to unchecked military actions, the erosion of democratic norms is accelerating, fueled by Project 2025’s authoritarian blueprint.

America’s Democracy Has Already Disappeared, Study Warns

The United States has crossed a dangerous threshold. Once hailed as a beacon of liberal democracy, it is now officially downgraded to an “electoral democracy” by the V-Dem Institute, an independent research group that monitors democratic health worldwide. The culprit? Unprecedented executive overreach under the Trump administration that has rolled back decades of civil rights progress and institutional safeguards.

The 2026 V-Dem Democracy Report reveals that America’s democratic status has regressed to levels not seen since 1965—a year marked by intense civil rights struggles. Shockingly, the report notes that the democratic backsliding in just one year under Trump outpaced the multi-year erosions seen in Hungary under Viktor Orbán and Serbia under Aleksandar Vučić. Yet, while Orbán’s recent election defeat offers a glimmer of hope for Europe, the U.S. faces a grimmer reality with Trump’s authoritarian playbook still in full force.

This decline is no abstract theory. It’s happening in real time: Texas voters were disenfranchised by last-minute polling site closures, congressional oversight has been bypassed as Trump launched unauthorized military actions against Iran and Venezuela, and ICE custody deaths have surged, including the public shooting of two nonviolent U.S. citizens in Minneapolis. Meanwhile, marginalized groups face targeted repression—trans Kansans lose driver’s licenses, families are torn apart by ICE raids, and postpartum patients in Texas face criminal charges for emergency abortions.

At the heart of this democratic decay lies Project 2025, a far-right strategy drafted by Heritage Foundation operatives and Trump insiders. This blueprint aims to dismantle checks and balances, politicize federal agencies, and concentrate power in the presidency. With over 40 percent of Project 2025’s agenda already underway, the risk of full authoritarian control is no longer hypothetical.

The crisis goes beyond the ballot box. Voter suppression, gerrymandering, and the flood of dark money into elections have hollowed out democratic competition. Over 90 percent of congressional races in 2026 are expected to be decided in primaries, where turnout is notoriously low and manipulation runs rampant. The fusion of wealth and political power further skews the playing field, making meaningful electoral change increasingly unlikely.

If America’s democracy is to survive, it will require more than just voting. It demands urgent collective action, institutional reforms, and a refusal to accept authoritarianism as the new normal. The clock is ticking, and the warning signs are clear: democracy isn’t just weakening in America—it’s disappearing before our eyes.
