Arizona Sheriff Slams FBI Director Kash Patel’s False Claims in Nancy Guthrie Disappearance
FBI Director Kash Patel falsely accused Pima County Sheriff’s Department of sidelining the FBI in the hunt for Nancy Guthrie, mother of NBC’s Savannah Guthrie. Sheriff Chris Nanos fired back, confirming FBI coordination from day one and exposing Patel’s attempt to politicize a sensitive investigation.
FBI Director Kash Patel is at it again, twisting facts to fit his narrative of federal victimhood. During a recent interview on Sean Hannity’s podcast, Patel claimed the Pima County Sheriff’s Department kept the FBI “out of the investigation” into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance for four critical days. Guthrie, 84, vanished from her Tucson home on February 1, and despite extensive searches, remains missing.
Patel told Hannity, “The first 48 hours of anyone’s disappearance are the most critical,” accusing local authorities of blocking FBI involvement. He also criticized the sheriff’s office for sending DNA evidence to a private Florida lab instead of the FBI’s Quantico facility, boasting of the bureau’s superior forensic capabilities.
But Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos didn’t let Patel’s claims go unanswered. In a firm statement, Nanos confirmed that the FBI was promptly notified by both his department and the Guthrie family. “Coordination with the Bureau began without delay,” Nanos said, noting that an FBI task force member was on scene the very night Guthrie disappeared.
On the DNA evidence controversy, Nanos explained that decisions were made “based on operational needs” and that his office continues to work closely with the FBI lab. He dismissed Patel’s insinuations of obstruction as misleading and emphasized the commitment to a “thorough, coordinated, and fact-based investigation.”
This public spat exposes Patel’s ongoing pattern of politicizing law enforcement and weaponizing federal agencies to inflate his own importance. Instead of focusing on accountability and facts, Patel chose to grandstand on a tragic case, undermining trust in the investigation.
Meanwhile, child safety advocate Elizabeth Smart weighed in, urging continued hope and relentless searching for Guthrie. “She absolutely still could be alive,” Smart said, recalling her own harrowing abduction and rescue.
Patel’s attempt to rewrite the story of the Nancy Guthrie case is not just a distortion of facts — it’s a dangerous distraction from the urgent work of finding a missing woman and delivering justice. We’ll keep watching as this investigation unfolds, calling out those who put politics ahead of truth and accountability.
