When US President Donald Trump said that he planned to “put Marco over there" as Cuba prepares to “fall," he was not picking a random person for the job. He was reaching for the one person in his cabinet whose entire political identity, family history and foreign policy worldview has been shaped by a single, defining conviction: that communist Cuba must go.

Marco Rubio is the son of Cuban immigrants and one of Washington’s most consistent and vocal advocates for regime change in Havana. Trump’s offhand remark in a CNN interview put a spotlight on a connection that has defined Marco Rubio’s life long before he entered politics.

A Family That Left Before Castro And One That Couldn’t Stay After

Marco Rubio was born in Miami in 1971 to parents who had both emigrated from Cuba. Mario Rubio Reina and Oriales Garcia left the island in 1956- more than two years before Fidel Castro’s revolution succeeded in 1959- primarily in search of economic opportunity rather than as refugees fleeing communism. They became US citizens in 1975.

His father worked as a banquet bartender while his mother worked as a hotel maid and factory worker. The story that shaped Marco Rubio’s politics most deeply, however, belongs to his maternal grandfather, Pedro Victor Garcia. Garcia initially came to the US in 1956, returned to Cuba for work in 1959 and then fled in 1962 after Castro consolidated power.

When he arrived back in the United States, he was briefly detained for lacking a visa before being allowed to stay. Marco Rubio has repeatedly said that conversations with his grandfather about life under Cuban communism were formative- pushing him toward politics and cementing a worldview in which the Cuban government represents an irredeemable authoritarian system that must be confronted.

Marco Rubio has consistently advocated for strict sanctions against the Cuban government, opposed normalisation policies with Havana and supported democratic opposition movements on the island.
