QUAKERTOWN, Pa. - 69 News has learned that at least three of the teens detained after a protest turned violent in Bucks County have been allowed to return home.
Five juveniles and an adult were taken into custody on Friday in Quakertown. They were arrested after an anti-ICE protest turned violent and high school students clashed with police.
69 News spoke with Attorney Ed Angelo of Quakertown who represents a 15-year-old girl who was involved in the incident. The girl was released from detention on Tuesday, Angelo says.
According to Angelo, his client faces the charges of aggravated assault and resisting arrest. He argues that his client was not responsible for the fight, and she and her friends were just defending themselves after the chief entered the crowd. Angelo says the chief never identified himself and believes the protest would have ended peacefully if the chief didn't get involved.
The preliminary hearings for the accused juveniles were closed Tuesday at the request of their defense attorneys.
Angelo says they do not have a future court date scheduled at this time.
We’ve reached out to the police chief multiple times for comment but have not received a response.
The students had planned a walkout, but word from school officials was that the protest had been called off.
About 35 students walked out anyway.
Police allege the students vandalized property and knocked a side mirror off of a car. Police also allege officers were assaulted.
The borough police chief was seen on cell phone video, in plain clothes, taking down and restraining a teenage girl.
