Babson College student says ICE offered return flight as 'trap' to re‑detain her

NEEDHAM, Mass. —

The attorney for the Babson College student deported to Honduras said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement offered her a flight back to the United States as a "trap" to re-detain her.

Any Lucia Lopez Belloza was flying home to Texas for Thanksgiving when she was deported at Logan Airport on Nov. 20.

Earlier this month, a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to return the 19-year-old to the country after one of the administration's lawyers admitted in court, Lopez Belloza's deportation was a mistake.

Lopez Belloza said an immigration officer reached out to her to organize a flight from Honduras back to the United States on Friday.

She asked the officer if she'd be free when the flight landed, and he said "yes."

But the Babson student claims a government filing says otherwise.

"It showed that I was not going to be released at all and I would be detained again," Lopez Belloza said. "This is not just about paperwork or policy, this is about my life. It's about being told one thing while something else is being planned behind closed doors."

NewsCenter 5 has reached out to ICE for comment about the allegations.

Homeland Security insists an immigration judge issued an order to remove Lopez Belloza back in 2015, but she said she was never notified of any such removal order.
