California House Democrats are mobilizing election officials nationwide to prepare for potential ballot seizures and federal interference in the November midterm elections. At an unofficial House committee hearing in San Francisco, led by Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Joe Morelle, lawmakers and experts warned that President Donald Trump’s ongoing assaults on voting rights are escalating toward authoritarian overreach.

“These battles right now are real,” said Rep. Kevin Mullin, emphasizing the threat posed by a president intent on nationalizing the vote and intimidating local election officials. This warning comes on the heels of Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco’s seizure of 650,000 ballots based on unfounded claims from conservative election denial groups. Bianco, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, was ordered by the California Supreme Court to halt his investigation, highlighting the dangerous precedent such actions set.

Legal experts at the hearing praised California’s robust ballot chain-of-custody laws for swiftly curbing Bianco’s overreach and urged other states to strengthen their protections. Voting rights advocate Brittany Stonesifer stressed the importance of training election workers and coordinating with state attorneys general to resist intimidation tactics.

The session also spotlighted Trump’s recent executive order mandating the U.S. Postal Service to restrict ballot mailings only to voters pre-verified by Homeland Security—a move widely criticized as a voter suppression scheme. Brian Renfroe, head of the National Association of Letter Carriers, testified that the Postal Service lacks the infrastructure to comply and warned against politicizing the agency.

Constitutional law professor Rory Little denounced the Trump-backed SAVE Act, which imposes burdensome citizenship documentation requirements that could disenfranchise many voters, including women who have changed their names after marriage. “The legislation should be called the Fool America Act,” Little said, highlighting how it fuels paranoia and voter suppression.

Despite the SAVE Act’s passage in the House, it faces hurdles in the Senate. Yet Democrats say the bill symbolizes Trump’s broader agenda to undermine democracy ahead of the midterms. Pelosi acknowledged widespread fears about whether the election will be free and fair but urged voters to register now and vote early to reclaim the House.

The “shadow hearings” held by Democrats across the country aim to educate and prepare voters, election officials, and judges to defend democracy against Trump’s authoritarian tactics. As threats to ballot security grow, these efforts are critical to ensuring every vote counts and the will of the people prevails.
