California Supreme Court Halts GOP Sheriff’s Election Fraud Probe, Demands Ballot Preservation

The California Supreme Court delivered a sharp rebuke to Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, ordering him to immediately halt his election fraud investigation and preserve all ballots seized during the probe. Bianco, a Republican and a leading candidate for governor, had controversially taken custody of more than 1,400 boxes of election materials related to a 2025 special election on redistricting.

The sheriff’s actions escalated tensions after a local citizens group lodged complaints about the November 2025 ballot count, complaints that local election officials and the county Board of Supervisors dismissed as baseless. Despite this, Bianco proceeded to seize 1,000 boxes of ballots earlier this year and then an additional 426 boxes after California Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, ordered him to stop.

Bonta had appealed to the state Supreme Court, arguing that Bianco’s seizure was an unlawful overreach. The court agreed, issuing a clear order: “Bianco and his office are hereby ordered to pause the investigation into the November 2025 special election and preserve all seized items.”

In a statement, AG Bonta condemned the sheriff’s actions as destabilizing and rogue, emphasizing that the court’s intervention was necessary to protect the integrity of California’s elections. “What the Sheriff says and what he does are often two different things,” Bonta said, underscoring the dangerous precedent Bianco’s investigation could set.

Bianco’s probe echoes the broader national pattern of Republican officials weaponizing unfounded election fraud claims to undermine democratic processes. This follows former President Donald Trump’s repeated baseless allegations about the 2020 election and recent ballot seizures in Georgia. By seizing ballots without clear legal authority, Bianco risks further eroding public trust in elections – a hallmark of the authoritarian overreach we track closely.

As Bianco pauses his investigation amid mounting legal challenges, the California Supreme Court’s order reinforces a vital principle: election materials belong to the voters and election officials, not partisan actors. This ruling is a critical check against attempts to destabilize democracy under the guise of election security.

We will continue to monitor developments in this case as it unfolds, holding accountable those who seek to weaponize election conspiracies for political gain.
