CBS News Invites Pentagon Chief Who Censored Reporters to "Free Speech" Dinner

CBS News has invited Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to the White House Correspondents' Association dinner celebrating the First Amendment—the same official whose censorship rules prompted CBS to quit the Pentagon press corps. The network's editor-in-chief Bari Weiss is rolling out the red carpet for an administration that demands journalists publish only government-approved information.

CBS News has invited Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to attend the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on April 25, according to a report from Breaker. The invitation represents a stunning about-face for a network that just weeks ago abandoned Pentagon coverage rather than comply with Hegseth's censorship demands.

The annual black-tie event at the Washington Hilton bills itself as a celebration of the First Amendment and press freedom. This year, CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss has decided that honoring includes breaking bread with officials who explicitly restrict what journalists can report.

Hegseth implemented new rules for Pentagon reporters that severely limited access and required outlets to publish only information approved by the Defense Department. CBS News was among several outlets that quit the Pentagon press corps rather than accept those terms. Now the network wants to seat him at their table for a dinner ostensibly celebrating journalism's independence from government control.

It remains unclear whether Hegseth has accepted the invitation. Donald Trump will attend the dinner for the first time as president and sit at the CBS News table on the dais alongside the network's senior White House correspondent Weijia Jiang, who also serves as president of the White House Correspondents' Association.

Trump boycotted the dinner every year during his first term. He last attended in 2011 as a guest of The Washington Post, where President Barack Obama and comedian Seth Meyers publicly mocked his presidential ambitions while Trump was promoting the racist birther conspiracy theory against Obama.

CBS News has experienced plummeting viewership and mass layoffs under Weiss's leadership. The network's decision to court Trump administration officials comes as it seeks to rebuild its audience.

Other outlets are following a similar playbook. Fox News will host Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. The New York Post invited Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz. The Wall Street Journal will be joined by former Trump campaign senior adviser Chris LaCivita, who dropped a lawsuit against the Daily Beast in January 2026 after demanding triple damages over reporting on his finances.

The White House Correspondents' Association has replaced the traditional comedian roast with celebrity mentalist Oz Pearlman, ensuring Trump faces softer treatment than Obama delivered in 2011.

Trump announced his attendance in a March 2 Truth Social post, claiming the correspondents "now admit that I am truly one of the Greatest Presidents in the History of our Country, the G.O.A.T., according to many." The president routinely attacks journalists as purveyors of "fake news" and has spent years undermining press credibility.

The dinner's stated purpose is to honor the First Amendment and the role of a free press in democracy. Inviting officials who censor reporters and demand pre-approval of coverage sends a different message entirely—one that suggests access to power matters more than the principles journalism claims to defend.
