Chicago Teen Fighting Terminal Cancer Dies After ICE Detains His Parents
Kevin González, a Chicago-born teen battling terminal colon cancer, died shortly after his parents were finally released from ICE custody and reunited with him in Mexico. His family’s desperate struggle exposes the cruel human cost of the Trump administration’s harsh immigration enforcement.
Kevin González’s story is a heartbreaking indictment of the Trump administration’s relentless immigration crackdown. The 18-year-old Chicago native, diagnosed with metastatic stage four colon cancer, spent his last days separated from his parents who were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after trying to enter the US without permission to see him.
Kevin’s parents, Isidro González Avilés and Norma Anabel Ramírez Amaya, were arrested near Douglas, Arizona, in mid-April after crossing the border from Mexico in a desperate attempt to be with their dying son. Despite pleas and a doctor’s letter requesting compassionate release, the Department of Homeland Security denied them entry due to “previous unlawful presence and entries.”
Only after a federal judge intervened were the parents released and deported back to Mexico, where they reunited with Kevin at his grandmother’s home in Durango on Saturday. Tragically, Kevin died late Sunday afternoon, just one day after seeing his parents again.
In a poignant moment captured by Telemundo, González Avilés knelt at his son’s feet, asking forgiveness and expressing his love, lamenting that Kevin “did not deserve the suffering he had.” Kevin’s brother and aunt confirmed his death to the media.
Chicago Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García, himself an immigrant from Durango, condemned the situation, stating the family “should have had more time together.” He vowed to continue fighting for a “humane immigration system that treats everyone with dignity.”
Kevin’s ordeal echoes that of Ofelia Torres, a 16-year-old Chicago girl who died in February after advocating for her father’s release from ICE custody. Both cases highlight the devastating human toll of the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration policies, which prioritize detention and deportation over compassion and family unity.
This tragedy underscores the urgent need to hold accountable those responsible for policies that tear families apart and disregard the dignity of immigrants. Kevin González’s final fight was not just against cancer but against an immigration system that failed him and his loved ones when they needed it most.
