Violence in the U.S.-Iran conflict surged anew Monday with the launch of “Project Freedom,” a military operation to escort ships through the Iran-blocked Strait of Hormuz. Central Command reported sinking six Iranian boats and repelling missile and drone attacks from Iran’s military, which insists that all ships coordinate passage with them.

Despite this escalation, Rep. Jason Crow, a Democrat from Colorado and former Army Ranger, is stepping up in Congress to halt what he calls an “endless cycle of conflict.” On Friday, Crow introduced a war powers resolution aimed at ending the war with Iran—a conflict he says the administration started recklessly, without strategy, allies, or transparency.

Crow criticized the administration for failing to explain the war to the American people or Congress and for lacking a clear exit plan. “We have an adversary in Iran, a 6,000-year-old society that believes time is on its side and wants to wait us out,” Crow said. “Meanwhile, we’re spending tens of billions of dollars, maintaining blockades, and deploying tens of thousands of service members.”

Currently, 55,000 U.S. service members are deployed in the Middle East, supported by guided-missile destroyers, over 100 aircraft, and other military assets. The operation’s commander, Admiral Brad Cooper, framed the mission as essential for regional security and the global economy, but Crow sees it as part of a dangerous pattern of military escalation without accountability.

Previous war powers resolutions have failed along party lines, but Crow is determined to break the cycle. Serving on the House Armed Services Committee, he is uniquely positioned to challenge the administration’s unchecked war-making powers. His resolution is a direct challenge to the administration’s military escalation and a call for Congress to reclaim its constitutional role in declaring war.

As diplomatic efforts stall and military tensions rise, Crow’s push highlights the urgent need for transparency, accountability, and an end to the costly and open-ended conflict with Iran. The question remains whether Congress will step up to rein in the executive branch’s reckless war-making or continue enabling a war that threatens both American lives and global stability.
