Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick Faces House Panel Over Epstein Ties

Howard Lutnick, the Commerce Secretary and a prominent figure in the Trump administration, is set to appear before the House Oversight Committee to answer tough questions about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. This comes amid growing scrutiny of powerful men who maintained ties with Epstein even after his 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution from an underage girl.

Lutnick, who helped lead the brokerage firm Cantor Fitzgerald before joining the Cabinet, has given conflicting accounts of his interactions with Epstein. While he has insisted that he had little to no relationship with Epstein, records and testimony reveal a different story. In 2011, Lutnick spent an hour at Epstein’s home, and in 2012 his family had lunch on Epstein’s notorious private island. They also maintained email contact years later, including a 2018 message regarding a local museum expansion and shared business ventures in 2013.

Despite these connections, Lutnick has repeatedly downplayed the relationship. In February, he told a Senate subcommittee that he “barely had anything to do with” Epstein. Yet, he also invited Epstein to a 2015 fundraiser for Hillary Clinton and accepted a $50,000 donation from Epstein for a 2017 dinner honoring Lutnick. These revelations raise serious questions about the extent of Lutnick’s ties to Epstein and the Trump administration’s willingness to confront those connections.

Democrats on the Oversight Committee have called for Lutnick’s resignation, while some Republicans, including Rep. Nancy Mace, have demanded his testimony. The White House, however, continues to stand by Lutnick, highlighting his role in advancing Trump’s tariff policies and his longstanding support for the president’s campaigns.

Lutnick’s appearance before Congress is a critical moment in the ongoing investigation into Epstein’s network and the powerful figures who enabled or ignored his crimes. It underscores the persistent challenge of holding elites accountable when they intersect with political power.

The House Oversight Committee is also preparing to hear testimony from former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, another figure linked to Epstein’s controversial past. Meanwhile, the shadow of Epstein’s death in a New York jail cell in 2019 continues to loom over efforts to uncover the full scope of his trafficking operation and the complicity of those around him.
