Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick Faces Scrutiny Over Epstein Ties Amid Contradictory Claims

Howard Lutnick, currently serving as Commerce Secretary under the Trump administration, finds himself under intense scrutiny for his connections to Jeffrey Epstein, the late financier convicted of sex offenses involving minors. Lutnick will testify on May 6 in a closed-door deposition before the House Oversight Committee, which is investigating how the federal government handled cases involving Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

The controversy erupted after newly released Department of Justice documents exposed emails between Lutnick and Epstein that contradicted Lutnick’s previous statements. Lutnick had claimed he severed all ties with Epstein in 2005, before Epstein’s 2008 conviction. During a 2025 podcast interview, Lutnick described a brief, uncomfortable visit to Epstein’s home in 2005, asserting that he never socialized or conducted business with Epstein thereafter.

However, the DOJ’s released emails showed that Lutnick and Epstein arranged lunches in 2012—years after Epstein’s conviction. Lutnick later acknowledged these communications and two meetings post-conviction during testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee. He downplayed the relationship, calling Epstein a “disgusting person” and insisting he “barely had anything to do with that person.” He recounted a one-hour lunch on Epstein’s private island in 2012, accompanied by his family and another family.

Senator Chris Van Hollen noted there is no evidence Lutnick engaged in wrongdoing with Epstein but condemned Lutnick’s contradictory statements to Congress. Lutnick declined to clarify these discrepancies during a House budget hearing but promised to address them before the Oversight Committee.

Lutnick’s appointment as Commerce Secretary came at the start of Trump’s second term and was confirmed on a strict party-line vote. He is among several Trump administration officials facing questions about ties to Epstein, as documents continue to reveal the breadth of Epstein’s connections across politics, finance, and entertainment.

This episode underscores the persistent challenge of holding powerful figures accountable amid a web of Epstein-linked relationships. Lutnick’s testimony will be a critical moment for congressional investigators seeking transparency and justice in the wake of the Epstein scandal.
