Commerce Secretary Lutnick Faces House Panel Over Epstein Ties Amid Contradictions

Howard Lutnick, U.S. Secretary of Commerce and one of the highest-ranking figures in the Trump administration linked to Jeffrey Epstein, is scheduled to testify before the House Oversight Committee investigating the disgraced financier’s network. This hearing comes amid mounting scrutiny over Lutnick’s contradictory statements about his interactions with Epstein, who pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting prostitution from an underage girl.

Lutnick has previously minimized his ties to Epstein, claiming minimal contact limited to a few emails and two meetings in 2011 and 2012. However, records tell a different story. Documents reveal that Lutnick spent an hour at Epstein’s New York home in 2011 and that his family visited Epstein’s private island for lunch the following year. The two also maintained email correspondence as late as 2018, discussing local matters like a museum expansion that would affect their neighborhood views.

Further complicating Lutnick’s claims, Epstein donated $50,000 to a 2017 dinner honoring the Commerce Secretary, and Lutnick invited Epstein to a 2015 fundraiser for Hillary Clinton. In 2013, the two men invested together in a business venture, underscoring a relationship far more involved than Lutnick has publicly acknowledged.

Despite these revelations, the White House continues to back Lutnick, highlighting his role as a key supporter of Trump’s tariff policies and a longtime fundraiser for Trump’s campaigns. Yet several Democrats and some Republicans, including Rep. Nancy Mace, have called for Lutnick to resign or at least fully cooperate with the Oversight Committee’s investigation.

This testimony will test the willingness of lawmakers to hold powerful figures accountable for their associations with Epstein, whose 2019 death in a New York jail cell cut short a federal sex trafficking trial. As the Trump administration attempts to move past Epstein’s shadow, Lutnick’s case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing need for transparency and accountability at the highest levels of government.
