Congress Moves to Dump $140 Billion More Into ICE and Border Patrol—No Strings Attached
After months of pushback, Congressional leaders are trying to shove through a massive $140 billion funding boost for ICE and Border Patrol using a partisan reconciliation process that bypasses normal checks. This reckless move comes while benefits for struggling communities face cuts, ignoring calls for accountability amid ongoing abuses.
Congress is on the verge of handing over an obscene $140 billion increase in funding to ICE and Border Patrol—without a single reform or safeguard attached. This comes after months of grassroots resistance and public outcry over the brutal, lawless tactics these agencies have used to terrorize immigrant communities.
The American Civil Liberties Union warns that this funding surge is being pushed through by Congressional leaders on both sides using reconciliation, a hyper-partisan procedure that sidesteps normal legislative debate and oversight. Meanwhile, programs that support basic needs for vulnerable communities are facing cuts, making this a stark choice between empowering violent enforcement agencies or investing in people.
For months, Congress had refused to allocate new money to these agencies, responding to widespread outrage over ICE’s abuses. But now, instead of reforming or restraining these out-of-control agencies, lawmakers want to write them a blank check.
The fight is far from over. The bill still needs to pass both the House and Senate, and the ACLU is urging constituents to tell their representatives to reject any measure that inflates ICE and Border Patrol’s already massive budgets without demanding accountability.
ICE and Border Patrol don’t need more money—they need to be reined in and reformed. Otherwise, this reckless funding spree will only deepen the harm these agencies inflict on immigrant communities and undermine democratic values.
