Congressional Democrats Probe Trump’s Pardons Amid Bribery Allegations
House and Senate Democrats are investigating President Trump’s pardons and commutations, spotlighting a “pay to play” scheme where clemency appears tied to favors and family crypto dealings. The probe targets high-profile recipients including a crypto billionaire linked to the Trump family’s financial ventures and a fraudster whose pardon blocked victim restitution.
Democratic lawmakers in both the House and Senate have launched a serious investigation into President Donald Trump’s use of his clemency powers, amid growing allegations that pardons and commutations were doled out in exchange for political favors and financial gain. The inquiry zeroes in on claims of a “pay to play” scheme that has tainted Trump’s second term, where pardons often went to convicted criminals with ties to his movement or business interests, regardless of any genuine remorse or justice.
Reps. Dave Min and Raul Ruiz, both from California, teamed up with Sen. Peter Welch of Vermont to demand answers from 17 individuals who received clemency from Trump. Among those on the list is Changpeng Zhao, a billionaire cryptocurrency investor who pleaded guilty to violating money laundering laws. Zhao’s pardon is especially troubling given his business connections to World Liberty Financial, the Trump family’s crypto firm. This firm has been a key player in expanding the Trump family’s wealth by billions during Trump’s presidency, leveraging unregulated crypto investments and political influence.
Another notable recipient is David Gentile, a convicted fraudster whose presidential commutation blocked thousands of victims from collecting $15.5 million in restitution. Gentile’s pardon starkly contradicts the Trump administration’s public stance on cracking down on fraud, exposing a glaring hypocrisy in the use of executive clemency.
In their letters to the clemency recipients, the Democratic lawmakers voiced deep concerns about the impact of these pardons on victims and the integrity of the justice system. They emphasized that their investigation aims to prevent any president from abusing the power of executive clemency for personal or political gain.
This probe adds to the mounting evidence of corruption and self-dealing that has marred the Trump administration, highlighting how the clemency power was weaponized to enrich the president’s family and reward loyalists rather than serve justice. As this investigation unfolds, it underscores the urgent need for accountability and transparency in the highest office of the land.
