Congresswoman Budzinski Slams Trump’s Executive Order Targeting Mail-In Voting
President Trump’s new executive order aims to restrict mail-in voting by imposing citizenship verification lists and limiting USPS ballot delivery, a move Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski calls unconstitutional and dangerous to voter access. Budzinski urges courts to block the order and defends the Postal Service’s critical role in ensuring every valid ballot is delivered on time.
Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski (IL-13) has issued a sharp rebuke of President Trump’s latest executive order, Executive Order 14399, which seeks to tighten control over mail-in voting by requiring the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration to compile lists of U.S. citizens eligible to vote. The order further mandates that the U.S. Postal Service deliver ballots only to voters on these lists.
Budzinski calls this move a “direct assault on Americans’ right to access the ballot box,” highlighting that the order is not only unconstitutional but also disregards the long history of safe and reliable mail-in voting in the United States. She points out that in 2024, over 99 percent of mail-in ballots were successfully delivered and counted, thanks to dedicated Postal Service workers who ensured ballots reached voters on time.
“This policy risks slowing down or blocking valid ballots, putting people’s votes at risk,” Budzinski warns. She stresses the importance of keeping the USPS free from political interference, emphasizing its “sacred mission” to deliver every ballot without delay or obstruction.
Budzinski has been a vocal advocate for improving mail service, especially for rural communities, and opposes efforts to privatize or reduce USPS service reliability. She remains hopeful that the courts will act swiftly to block this unlawful executive order and protect the integrity of mail-in voting.
This executive order fits a broader pattern of authoritarian overreach by the Trump administration, aiming to undermine democratic participation through restrictive voting policies. Budzinski’s statement underscores the urgent need to defend voting rights and hold the administration accountable for attacks on democracy.
