Connecticut Officials Condemn ICE Detention of Afghan Student as 'Un-American'

ICE’s detention of Rihan, a 19-year-old Cheshire High School senior and son of a U.S. Afghan interpreter, has sparked outrage among Connecticut leaders who call the move cruel and unjust. Despite no criminal history and lawful entry, Rihan remains locked up in a Massachusetts detention center, prompting calls for immediate release and scrutiny of Trump-era immigration policies.

Connecticut officials are sounding the alarm over Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s recent detention of Rihan, a 19-year-old senior at Cheshire High School and son of “Zia,” an Afghan interpreter who worked alongside U.S. forces. The family, who arrived in the U.S. on humanitarian visas to escape Taliban threats, now faces renewed trauma as Rihan was taken from his home and sent to the same Massachusetts detention center where his father was held last year.

Attorney Lauren Cundick Peterson, who has represented the family, confirmed she filed a federal petition demanding Rihan’s immediate release but said the government has offered no explanation for his detention. Zia was released last year after a judge ruled he was in the U.S. legally and posed no threat. Neither father nor son has any criminal record, and both have cooperated fully with immigration authorities.

At a press conference, Governor Ned Lamont, Attorney General William Tong, and Senator Richard Blumenthal condemned ICE’s actions as “un-American” and “beyond cruelty.” Lamont questioned the Trump Administration’s promise to deport only the “worst of the worst,” pointing out that Rihan is an “A” student with dreams of becoming a cardiologist. Blumenthal drew a stark comparison to deadly ICE raids in Minneapolis earlier this year, warning that Connecticut should not follow that brutal path.

Local representatives echoed this outrage. Rep. Liz Linehan shared how the Cheshire community has rallied in support of Rihan’s family, emphasizing that neighbors do not turn away when someone is hurting. Rep. Jack Fazzino framed the family’s story as embodying the best of American values, condemning the divisive “us versus them” mentality that ICE’s actions represent.

This case highlights a broader pattern of aggressive immigration enforcement under the Trump administration targeting vulnerable individuals who have risked everything to aid the United States. It underscores the urgent need for accountability and reform in how these policies are carried out, especially when they tear apart families who have already endured unimaginable hardship.

For Rihan and his family, the fight for freedom and dignity continues. Connecticut officials and community members are demanding that ICE end this unjust detention and reaffirm the country’s commitment to protecting those who have sacrificed for it.
