Crime analyst breaks down the I.C.E. shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti
Crime analyst Mark McGuire, a retired homicide detective, reviewed the recent deaths of Minnesotans Renee Good and Alex Pretti by ICE agents. McGuire indicated that Good’s shooting involved potentially justifiable circumstances with blurred lines, while Pretti’s killing was unequivocally a murder. The Department of Justice is investigating Pretti’s death, and it has yet to examine Good’s case.
From the eyes of a law enforcement investigator, what are the play-by-play assessments of I.C.E agents actions in recent deaths of citizens.
Dame Crawford speaks to crime analyst, Mark McGuire, on the recent killings of Minnesotans Renee Good and Alex Pretti by I.C.E. agents. McGuire is a retired homicide detective from the Long Beach Police Department.
Good, a poet and writer, was shot on January 7, 2026 while attempting to drive away after a verbal exchange with officers who were patrolling the area. Good was shot by Jonathan Ross, a local officer who was moved by the Department of Homeland Security after the incident. The New York Times revealed Ross claimed to have suffered injuries.
Pretti’s, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse was killed on January 24, 2026, amid protests against immigration enforcement actions, which were met with force from ICE. Pretti’s shooters, Border Patrol agents Jesus Ochoa and CBP officer Raymundo Gutierrez, were placed on administrative leave in late January 2026. They too have been moved out of Minneapolis for their safety.
McGuire’s expertise is longstanding. Working for the agency for almost 25 years, he was instrumental in developing and teaching advanced training in the areas of homicide investigations, officer involved shootings, undercover investigations, gang culture, trends and awareness. McGuire assesses that Good’s death has some potentially blurred lines that can be used to justify the shooting of her through her car window. While Pretti’s death was a hands-down murder. The Department of Justice has yet to investigate Good’s death, but the bureau said it is looking into Pretti’s murder.
