Daily Wire’s Michael Knowles Dodges Condemning Trump’s Pardons of January 6 Rioters in Heated Debate
In a fiery Dartmouth debate, Mehdi Hasan repeatedly pressed Daily Wire host Michael Knowles to condemn Donald Trump’s pardons of January 6 rioters who assaulted police officers. Knowles dodged the question multiple times, refusing to denounce pardons for violent criminals, neo-Nazis, and even a pedophile, exposing the ongoing defense of Trump’s abuse of pardon power.
At a recent Dartmouth Political Union debate, Mehdi Hasan confronted Daily Wire’s Michael Knowles over one of the most glaring abuses of power from the Trump administration: pardoning January 6 rioters who violently attacked law enforcement. Hasan pressed Knowles repeatedly—six or seven times by his count—to condemn President Trump’s pardons of individuals convicted of assaulting over 140 police officers during the Capitol insurrection.
Knowles consistently sidestepped the question, offering deflections and “clarifying questions” rather than a direct answer. When Hasan asked if Knowles condemned Trump for pardoning neo-Nazis, domestic abusers, and pedophiles among the rioters, Knowles responded with evasive remarks, even questioning the legitimacy of accusations against the Southern Poverty Law Center to muddy the waters.
Hasan named specific pardoned individuals, including Daniel Rodriguez, who assaulted Capitol officer Michael Fanone, and Andrew Paul Johnson, a January 6 participant recently sentenced to life for child sex abuse. Despite this, Knowles refused to condemn Trump’s actions, instead claiming to oppose assaulting police and pedophilia without directly addressing the pardons.
The back-and-forth escalated until Hasan declared that Knowles had failed to answer the question three or four times, calling out the Daily Wire host’s unwillingness to hold Trump accountable for rewarding violent criminals and extremists with clemency.
This exchange spotlights a broader pattern of Trump loyalists defending or ignoring the former president’s blatant misuse of the pardon power to protect political allies and whitewash crimes connected to the January 6 attack. It also underscores the refusal by some right-wing media figures to confront the reality of Trump’s authoritarian overreach and the ongoing threat it poses to democratic accountability.
In an era where pardons are weaponized to shield lawbreakers and intimidate justice, silence or equivocation from influential voices like Knowles only enables corruption and undermines the rule of law. Mehdi Hasan’s relentless questioning serves as a crucial reminder that accountability demands clear answers—not evasions—in the face of blatant abuses of power.
