Dan Bongino Warns of Federal Prison Threat After Tumultuous FBI Tenure
Former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino claims he lives in daily fear of being targeted and imprisoned by political rivals after exposing alleged corruption within the Bureau. Bongino’s chilling admission on Sean Hannity’s podcast underscores ongoing concerns about weaponizing federal law enforcement for political ends.
Dan Bongino, who served as Deputy Director of the FBI for less than a year, has issued a stark warning about the dangers he believes await him due to his efforts to reform the agency. Speaking on Sean Hannity’s podcast, Bongino revealed he fears “thugs” will be sent to his home and that he could end up in “federal prison” as retribution for exposing what he calls deep-rooted corruption inside the Bureau.
Bongino joined the FBI in March 2025 with a stated mission to create an agency that was transparent, accountable, and committed to the rule of law. However, his brief tenure ended in January 2026 amid what he describes as fierce internal resistance. He claimed to have uncovered a “mother lode” of secret “Russiagate” files hidden in FBI burn bags, files that he believes reveal a long-running conspiracy against former President Trump.
“I’m scared, man,” Bongino told Hannity. “I know what I did. And I’m proud of my work. And I am proud of what me and Kash [Patel] accomplished in the past year.” Yet he says the knowledge he gained has left him “terrified,” convinced that political enemies will weaponize the justice system against him if Republicans lose the next election.
Bongino expressed anxiety over the possibility of being arrested on trivial or fabricated charges, comparing his fears to what he alleges happened to Trump in the aftermath of the Russia investigation. “It doesn’t matter, they’ll rewrite the book just like they did for President Trump,” Bongino said. He described internal FBI “snakes” leaking information to the media and suggested that no one stopped what he calls the “Russia hoax” and “Crossfire Hurricane” operation.
To protect himself, Bongino said he retained an outside attorney to ensure all his actions were “by the book.” Still, he worries that the justice system could be weaponized to silence him and others who challenge entrenched powers within federal law enforcement.
Bongino’s alarmist claims highlight the ongoing politicization of the FBI under Director Kash Patel, who alongside Bongino, has been associated with efforts to purge the Bureau of perceived internal enemies. Their tenure reflects a broader pattern of loyalty purges and attempts to turn federal agencies into political tools.
As Bongino warns of “thugs” coming to his house and potential imprisonment, his statements serve as a troubling reminder of the erosion of rule of law and the dangers posed by the weaponization of justice for partisan ends. The question remains: will the FBI continue down this path or reclaim its independence as a nonpartisan law enforcement agency?
