Deal with Hegseth is a badge of demerit for Scouting America - The Boston Globe
This is a brutal sellout of young people who looked to the organization to respect and care for them, as Scouting America had promised.
The reported Scouting America agreement with the Department of Defense (“Hegseth targets Scouting America’s ‘woke’ policies,” Page A2, Feb. 28) requires that all Scouts register using their sex at birth and discontinues the Citizenship in Society merit badge, which had recognized “the benefits of diversity, equity, inclusion, and ethical leadership.” This is a brutal sellout of young people who looked to the organization to respect and care for them, as Scouting America had promised. The group has failed to keep its word.
The isn’t the first time Scouting America has not kept its promises, but unlike the sexual abuse crisis, this time it is not just youth who have been betrayed. In the wake of the abuse scandal, a new generation of adults stepped forward to create a scouting culture that protects and values all children. Adult volunteers work countless hours and have rebuilt Scouting America into a respected organization that welcomes everyone, regardless of race, belief, or gender. In reaching this deal with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the organization has broken faith with these adult volunteers, too.
Now the question is whether local Scout councils, such as the Boston-area Spirit of Adventure, will make a stand to protect their Scouts and honor their volunteers or bow to Hegseth.
