Democrats Demand Rubio Admit Israel’s Nuclear Arsenal as US Ramps Up Iran Conflict
Thirty House Democrats are calling on Secretary of State Marco Rubio to end decades of US silence and officially acknowledge Israel’s nuclear weapons amid escalating tensions with Iran. They warn that this ongoing ambiguity undermines transparency, risks dangerous escalation, and hinders nuclear nonproliferation efforts in the Middle East.
A group of 30 House Democrats led by Joaquin Castro is pressing Secretary of State Marco Rubio to publicly recognize that Israel possesses nuclear weapons, breaking with longstanding US policy of strategic ambiguity. Their urgent letter, sent Monday, comes as the Trump administration deepens military collaboration with Israel against Iran, ostensibly to prevent Tehran from acquiring its own nuclear arsenal.
“We are, in the fullest sense, fighting this war side by side with a country whose potential nuclear weapons program the United States government officially refuses to acknowledge,” the lawmakers wrote. They argue that Congress has a constitutional right to know the full nuclear balance in the Middle East and the risks of escalation posed by any party in this volatile conflict.
Israel has never officially confirmed its nuclear weapons program, but extensive evidence dating back to the 1950s shows it has developed a substantial arsenal with help from allies like France and apartheid South Africa. Despite this, every US administration since then—including Barack Obama’s—has refused to publicly address the issue, often dismissing questions as speculation.
The Democrats’ letter highlights past admissions from US officials that tacitly acknowledge Israel’s nuclear status. For example, Robert Gates, during his 2006 confirmation hearing for Secretary of Defense, noted that Israel was one of the nuclear powers surrounding Iran. Israeli officials themselves have dropped hints: in 2023, heritage minister Amichai Eliyahu suggested that using a nuclear weapon in Gaza was “one of the possibilities,” while former prime minister Ehud Olmert explicitly grouped Israel with nuclear-armed states in 2006.
The letter also condemns the Trump administration’s refusal to discuss Israel’s nuclear capabilities openly. When Castro pressed under secretary of state Thomas DiNanno at a congressional hearing in March, DiNanno declined to answer.
“The United States openly acknowledges the nuclear weapons programs of the United Kingdom, France, India, Pakistan, Russia, China, and North Korea. We ask that Israel be held to the same standard as any other foreign country,” the Democrats wrote.
They warn that this persistent ambiguity damages efforts to address nuclear proliferation transparently. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has openly stated that Saudi Arabia would pursue nuclear weapons if Iran succeeds, escalating the region’s arms race.
By demanding transparency, these Democrats are challenging a dangerous double standard that undermines US credibility and fuels instability in the Middle East. As the Trump administration escalates conflict with Iran, the American public deserves full disclosure about the nuclear realities behind this proxy war.
