Democrats Renew Push to Impeach Pete Hegseth Over Illegal War in Iran

Democratic Representative Yassamin Ansari, an Iranian American lawmaker from Arizona, is taking a bold stand against the Trump administration’s war in Iran by introducing articles of impeachment against Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Ansari calls Hegseth the “chief enabler” of an illegal and devastating conflict that has already resulted in thousands of civilian deaths and the loss of American lives.

The United States and Israel have been engaged in a brutal war with Iran for nearly six weeks, following U.S. strikes in February labeled "Operation Epic Fury." The conflict has claimed more than 3,500 lives inside Iran, including at least 1,665 civilians, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency. The violence has spilled beyond Iran’s borders, with Israeli military operations in Lebanon killing at least 1,500 people.

Ansari’s impeachment articles come on the heels of a deadly Tomahawk missile strike on a girls’ school in Minab, Iran, which killed over 165 people, most of them children. Initial U.S. military investigations suggest the strike was carried out in error by American forces, contradicting President Trump’s earlier claims that Iran was responsible. Ansari condemns Hegseth for “repeatedly violating his oath of office and his duty to the Constitution,” emphasizing that only Congress has the authority to declare war, not the president or his appointees.

This is not the first attempt to hold Hegseth accountable. In December, Michigan Democrat Shri Thanedar filed impeachment articles against him for what Thanedar described as “extrajudicial assassinations” and potential war crimes. That effort failed but set the stage for renewed scrutiny.

Pentagon spokesperson Kingsley Wilson dismisses the impeachment push as a political stunt, praising Hegseth for “protecting the homeland” and touting the “major successes” of the Department of War. But critics argue the administration’s aggressive military actions and incendiary rhetoric, including Trump’s threat that “a whole civilization will die tonight,” have dangerously escalated the conflict and put both Iranians and Americans at risk.

Other Democrats have joined the chorus of condemnation. Rep. John Larson highlights the war’s impact on American families and security, while Rep. Sara Jacobs calls for the Joint Chiefs of Staff to ignore any unlawful military orders from the president. Even conservative commentator Alex Jones labeled Trump’s threats as “war crimes” and likened him to a “super villain.”

As the war rages on and civilian casualties mount, Ansari’s move signals growing demands for accountability within the administration. The impeachment articles are expected to be formally introduced when Congress reconvenes, underscoring the urgent need to confront the dangerous path the Trump administration has taken in the Middle East.
