Democrats Slam Hegseth Over $25 Billion Iran War, Call Out Lies and Military Purges

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth faced fierce Democratic criticism in his first congressional hearing since the Trump administration launched the costly and unauthorized war with Iran. Lawmakers tore into the $25 billion price tag, the administration's shifting justifications, and Hegseth’s purge of top military leaders — but he dismissed their concerns as "reckless" and doubled down on the conflict.

Democrats Slam Hegseth Over $25 Billion Iran War, Call Out Lies and Military Purges

In a tense six-hour hearing before the House Armed Services Committee, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confronted scathing questions from Democrats over the Trump administration’s ongoing war with Iran — a conflict launched without congressional approval that has already drained $25 billion from the Pentagon budget.

Democrats lambasted the administration for misleading the public about the war’s rationale, pointing to contradictory claims about Iran’s nuclear program. Representative Adam Smith highlighted the glaring inconsistency: Iran’s nuclear facilities were “obliterated” in 2025 strikes, yet the administration insisted the threat remained “imminent” just months later to justify the war. Smith bluntly noted the war left the U.S. “at exactly the same place we were before.”

The war’s fallout is hitting Americans hard. Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz has sent global fuel prices soaring, squeezing household budgets and complicating political calculations ahead of the midterms. Democrats accused Hegseth of lying to the public alongside President Trump, with Representative John Garamendi branding the conflict “a geopolitical calamity” and a “self-inflicted wound to America.”

Hegseth, however, refused to answer tough questions directly and dismissed Democratic criticism as “reckless, feckless and defeatist.” He rebuked lawmakers accusing him of dishonesty and questioned their patriotism, claiming their opposition was driven by “hatred for President Trump.”

The hearing also exposed turmoil within the military’s leadership ranks. Hegseth defended his controversial firing of several top officers, including Army Chief of Staff General Randy George and Navy Secretary John Phelan, claiming “new leadership” was essential to build a “warrior culture.” Democrats and some Republicans expressed bipartisan concern that these abrupt personnel changes undermine military stability and morale.

Republican defenders of Hegseth praised his efforts to “innovate” and remove officials “getting in the way,” but the broader picture is one of an administration recklessly escalating a costly foreign conflict while sidelining Congress and sowing chaos within the Pentagon.

As the Trump administration pushes a historic $1.5 trillion military budget, Hegseth’s hearing laid bare the heavy price of a war launched on dubious grounds — a price paid in billions of dollars, shattered military leadership, and eroded public trust. The American people deserve answers, but Hegseth’s combative stance signals more of the same stonewalling and obfuscation.
