Democrats Still Play Procedure While Trump Runs a Mafia Don Operation

Trump’s corruption is no longer a secret, yet Democrats keep framing it as a procedural problem instead of calling it what it is: a personal, Mafia-style grift. This managerial mindset leaves them flat-footed as Trump weaponizes government for self-enrichment and flaunts his authoritarian impulses.

The Beltway has finally caught on: Trump’s presidency is a nonstop carnival of corruption, self-dealing, and authoritarian overreach. From weaponizing the Department of Justice to enrich himself, to turning the White House into a gaudy monument to his ego, his abuses are blatant and personal. Yet, frustratingly, Democratic leaders keep treating these outrages as mere procedural infractions rather than the moral and criminal failings they are.

As The Nation’s Chris Lehmann and Christopher Shay point out, Democrats see themselves as managers of institutions, fixated on norms and rules rather than the raw, personal corruption at the heart of the Trump operation. This outlook reduces their response to scolding and bewilderment when Trump and his allies brazenly flout every standard of governance. They warn about threats to institutions but fail to hammer home that Trump is running the federal government like a Mafia don, stealing from taxpayers and weaponizing law enforcement to target his enemies.

Meanwhile, Trump and his MAGA allies have spun a cynical narrative of victimhood and deep-state conspiracy that has successfully muddied the waters for years. Republicans in the Senate even demand a billion dollars from taxpayers to fund Trump’s ostentatious White House ballroom, a shrine to his narcissism. The Democrats’ failure to pivot from procedural complaints to a direct, personal indictment of Trump’s corruption leaves voters confused and the swamp un-drained.

This managerial anguish is more than a tactical error. It reveals a disconnect between Democratic leaders and the urgent need to expose Trump’s kleptocracy for what it is. The upcoming midterms demand a clear-eyed, unflinching message: Trump is not just breaking rules—he is stealing the country blind and eroding democracy from the inside out. Only by calling out the Mafia don in the Oval Office can voters be mobilized to finally kick these clowns out.
