Democrats Zero In on Pete Hegseth Over Iran War and Pentagon Budget in Rare Hearing

For the first time since the Trump administration launched a war with Iran over two months ago, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will be grilled publicly by House Democrats in a hearing Wednesday. The House Armed Services Committee hearing, officially about the 2027 defense budget, is expected to be dominated by tough questions on the administration’s “undefined” and “unauthorized” conflict in Iran, as well as the controversial deployment of National Guard troops.

Democrats see this as their best shot to demand answers after months of opaque decision-making and military escalation. “We get one day with this guy, so we’re going to use it,” Rep. Sarah Elfreth (D-Md.) told MS NOW. The Pentagon chief has a long list of failings to explain, from botched operations to budget chaos, according to members like Rep. Pat Ryan (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Eugene Vindman (D-Va.).

The committee’s top Democrat, Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), signaled that lawmakers will press Hegseth on the staggering $1.5 trillion defense budget request—a 42 percent increase from last year—amid a $39 trillion national debt and massive tax cuts benefiting the wealthy. “There’s been no assurance of how Secretary Hegseth is going to manage that windfall amid the chaos that has defined his tenure,” Smith said.

On Iran, Democrats want clarity on the war’s true cost, the administration’s objectives, and any exit strategy. Rep. Wesley Bell (D-Mo.) criticized the shifting rationale for the conflict—from nuclear threats supposedly neutralized months ago, to regime change, to targeting an outdated navy posing little danger. “There’s no plan,” Bell bluntly stated.

The hearing will also tackle the politicization of National Guard deployments, a move Democrats argue undermines military professionalism and serves partisan goals.

With Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine also present, Democrats plan to use this rare public forum to demand transparency and accountability for what they describe as reckless military adventurism and fiscal irresponsibility under Hegseth’s watch.
