Weeks before Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide in a rundown Manhattan jail in 2019, he was discovered unconscious on the floor of his cell with marks on his neck. Initially, Epstein claimed his cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione—a former police officer turned convicted quadruple murderer—had tried to kill him. Now, a suicide note Tartaglione says he found inside a book in their cell has finally been made public after years locked away in a courthouse vault. Tartaglione, who was awaiting trial for orchestrating the kidnapping and murder of four men over drug money disputes, shared a cell with Epstein at the Metropolitan Correctional Centre. Epstein was found with neck injuries in July 2019 and placed on suicide watch. At that time, he accused Tartaglione of threatening him and extorting money, claims he later denied in jail interviews.

After Epstein’s death on August 10, 2019, officials reported finding a handwritten note in his cell, but it was dismissed as a list of complaints about jail conditions rather than a suicide note. The new note Tartaglione revealed reads: “They investigated me for month – found nothing!!! It is a treat to be able to choose the time to say goodbye. Epstein’s survivors express frustration and pain over the note’s ambiguous nature and delayed release. Actress Alicia Arden, who reported Epstein to police in 1997, called the note’s timing “hurtful” and urged for transparency.
