Epstein’s Ex-Cellmate’s Mysterious Note Surfaces After Years of Silence
Nearly seven years after Jeffrey Epstein’s death, a cryptic note allegedly found by his former cellmate Nicholas Tartaglione has finally been made public. Tartaglione, a convicted killer and ex-cop, claims the note was a suicide message Epstein hid in one of his books — but its authenticity and meaning remain murky amid ongoing questions about Epstein’s death.
Jeffrey Epstein’s death in a Manhattan jail in 2019 has been shrouded in suspicion and unanswered questions. Now, a new piece of the puzzle has emerged — a handwritten note that Epstein’s ex-cellmate Nicholas Tartaglione says he found tucked inside one of his books shortly before Epstein’s first suspected suicide attempt.
Tartaglione, a former police officer turned convicted murderer, shared a cell with Epstein at the Metropolitan Correctional Center weeks before Epstein’s eventual death by suicide. Tartaglione’s background is grim: after retiring on a disability pension, he allegedly orchestrated the kidnapping and murder of four men over a drug dispute, leading to his arrest in 2016 and a life sentence in 2023.
The note, which was kept under seal until a judge unsealed it this week, adds a new layer to the fraught timeline of Epstein’s final days. Tartaglione claims he found the note four days after Epstein was discovered unconscious with marks on his neck on July 23, 2019 — an incident first treated as a suicide attempt. Epstein initially accused Tartaglione of trying to kill him, but later retracted the claim, calling it fabricated.
What’s striking is how little attention the note received over the years. It was submitted as evidence in Tartaglione’s unrelated murder case but remained hidden from public view. Tartaglione publicly referenced it only last year in a prison interview, trying to counter conspiracy theories that Epstein’s death was not a suicide.
The note itself is cryptic and open to interpretation. It reads in part: “They investigated me for month — found nothing!!!” and “It is a treat to be able to choose the time to say goodbye.” The tone is ambiguous, neither a clear suicide note nor a simple grievance. The timing, context, and authenticity remain unclear.
Epstein’s death was officially ruled a suicide, and the first incident was seen as a missed chance to prevent his eventual death. But the release of this note revives questions about what really happened in those final weeks, the conditions in the notoriously decrepit jail, and the possible motives behind Epstein’s cryptic last words.
This new development underscores the ongoing need for transparency and accountability in the Epstein case, which continues to expose the failures of the justice system to protect victims and hold powerful figures accountable. The note may not solve the mystery, but it reminds us that many pieces of this dark story remain hidden — and that we must keep digging.
