Erika Kirk Delivers Commencement Speech at Hillsdale College Amid Protests
Erika Kirk, CEO of Turning Point USA and widow of the late Charlie Kirk, headlined Hillsdale College’s graduation ceremony, honoring her late husband’s legacy. Her appearance sparked protests from local activists denouncing Turning Point USA’s role in spreading right-wing extremism and culture-war politics.
Erika Kirk, newly appointed CEO of conservative activist group Turning Point USA, took the podium as the keynote speaker at Hillsdale College’s commencement ceremony this past Saturday. The event marked a solemn tribute to her late husband, Charlie Kirk, the organization’s founder who was fatally shot last September while speaking at Utah Valley University.
In her speech, Erika Kirk emphasized Charlie’s dedication to Hillsdale College, where he completed numerous online courses under the tutelage of Hillsdale’s president, Dr. Larry Arnn. “Charlie loved Hillsdale deeply,” she said, recalling how even on their honeymoon, he was determined to finish his lectures and certificates. The college honored both Kirks with honorary doctorate degrees of public service during the ceremony.
Kirk’s remarks also outlined traditional gender roles, urging men “to provide, to lead, to anchor your families in strength and consistency,” and women “to nurture, to build, to shape lives with wisdom and endurance.” This rhetoric aligns with the conservative values espoused by Turning Point USA and Hillsdale College alike.
However, the event was met with vocal opposition. Protesters organized by the group Hope in Action gathered prior to the ceremony, condemning Turning Point USA as a “national right-wing political machine” that perpetuates “MAGA politics, anti-trans rhetoric, anti-DEI backlash, and culture-war extremism.” Allison and Norah Bader, local activists, made clear their intent to confront what they describe as “blatant racism, homophobia, and sexism” promoted by the organization and its ties to Project 2025’s authoritarian blueprint.
The protest underscored the growing backlash against efforts to politicize educational institutions and promote exclusionary conservative agendas under the guise of free speech and academic freedom. Hillsdale College, known for its hardline conservative stance, continues to serve as a platform for figures like the Kirks to advance these ideologies.
WILX livestreamed Kirk’s full commencement address, providing direct access to her remarks amid the controversy. The event reflects the ongoing cultural and political battles playing out on college campuses nationwide, where conservative groups like Turning Point USA aggressively mobilize youth while facing resistance from activists demanding inclusivity and accountability.
This commencement ceremony was not just a graduation; it was a flashpoint in the culture wars, spotlighting the clash between entrenched conservative power and grassroots opposition fighting to preserve democratic values and civil rights.
