Ex-Top NIAID Advisor Indicted for Hiding Records to Shield COVID-19 Lab Leak Narrative

David M. Morens, a longtime senior advisor at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), has been indicted for a brazen scheme to conceal federal records related to COVID-19 research grants. Charged with conspiracy, falsifying records, and aiding and abetting, Morens allegedly coordinated with co-conspirators to evade Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and manipulate the official narrative about the virus’s origins.

According to the Department of Justice, Morens and others orchestrated a cover-up after the NIH terminated a controversial grant tied to bat coronavirus research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). This grant’s termination was a key moment in debates over whether COVID-19 emerged naturally or leaked from a lab. Instead of transparency, the indictment reveals that Morens and his collaborators used private email accounts to hide their communications, deliberately circumventing government record-keeping laws.

The scheme went beyond mere concealment. Morens is accused of accepting illegal gratuities, including expensive wine and promises of lavish meals, in exchange for pushing a narrative that supported natural origins of COVID-19. He allegedly authored a scientific commentary advocating this view while benefiting personally from the arrangement.

FBI Director Kash Patel condemned the actions as a “profound abuse of trust,” emphasizing that the FBI will relentlessly pursue those who undermine public accountability. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche underscored the damage caused by deliberate misinformation during a global health crisis, calling it a betrayal of the American people.

This indictment shines a harsh light on the politicization and corruption within federal agencies during the pandemic. It reveals how officials prioritized protecting certain interests over public transparency and scientific integrity at a moment when honest information was desperately needed. Morens now faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted, sending a clear message that abuse of power and deception in public health will not be tolerated.

Only Clowns Are Orange will continue to track this case as it unfolds, exposing the rot behind the scenes of government pandemic response and holding those responsible accountable for their actions.
