FBI Director Kash Patel Blasts Arizona Sheriff Over Nancy Guthrie Case, Sheriff Pushes Back

FBI Director Kash Patel is turning up the heat on Arizona law enforcement over their handling of the Nancy Guthrie disappearance, igniting a rare public feud with Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.

Guthrie, mother of NBC "Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie, vanished from her Tucson home on January 31. The case has gripped the community for more than three months, but instead of uniting efforts, the investigation has become mired in finger-pointing.

On Sean Hannity’s podcast this week, Patel accused the Pima County Sheriff's Department of keeping the FBI out of the investigation for four critical days. He claimed local officials failed to promptly involve federal resources, delaying access to key evidence like doorbell camera footage.

“For four days we were kept out of the investigation,” Patel said, describing how the FBI eventually obtained chilling images of a masked suspect lurking outside Guthrie’s home. Patel also slammed local officials for opting to send DNA evidence to a Florida lab rather than the FBI’s Quantico facility, boasting that he had a plane ready to expedite the process overnight.

But Sheriff Nanos swiftly pushed back, posting a statement on X (formerly Twitter) asserting that FBI agents were on the scene the night Guthrie was reported missing and that coordination with the bureau began immediately. He emphasized that decisions about evidence processing were made based on operational needs and that the Pima County lab and FBI’s Quantico lab have collaborated closely from the start.

“The laboratory utilized by the Pima County Sheriff's Department and the FBI Laboratory in Quantico have worked in close partnership from the outset and continue to collaborate in the analysis of evidence,” Nanos wrote.

This clash is more than a simple turf war. It underscores how politicized and fractured law enforcement has become under the Trump administration’s legacy, where federal agencies are weaponized and loyalty purges have politicized investigations. Kash Patel, a Trump loyalist appointed to lead the FBI, has been accused of politicizing the bureau and undermining trust in law enforcement.

The Guthrie case remains unsolved, but investigators have cleared her family of any involvement. As the search for answers continues, the public deserves transparent, effective cooperation — not public spats that distract from finding the truth.

This bitter public feud between Patel and local law enforcement reveals the corrosive impact of politicizing federal agencies, a hallmark of the Trump era. We will keep tracking how these power struggles affect justice and accountability in cases that matter.
