FBI Director Kash Patel Claims FBI Lied to Spy on Trump Campaign Using Fake Warrants
Kash Patel, former FBI director under Trump, alleges the FBI deceived a secret court to obtain illegal surveillance warrants targeting Trump and his inner circle during the 2016 campaign. Patel says the warrants were based on fabricated intelligence paid for by political opponents and later rescinded by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.
In a bombshell appearance on Sean Hannity’s show, Kash Patel, who served on the National Security Council and as an FBI official during the Trump administration, accused the FBI of orchestrating a politically motivated spying operation against Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. Patel claimed the FBI misled the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA court) by submitting false and unverified intelligence to secure warrants used to surveil Trump and his associates.
Patel alleged that political operatives hired overseas “bogus intelligence assets” to manufacture fraudulent information, funneling these fabrications into the intelligence community and the FBI. This disinformation was then weaponized to spy on Trump’s campaign, violating legal standards and the rights of American citizens.
According to Patel, the FISA court itself later determined that these warrants were illegal and rescinded them after discovering the FBI withheld exculpatory evidence and relied on unverified claims. Patel said, “The FBI essentially lied in those applications,” undermining the integrity of the investigation.
This is not the first time Patel has pushed these narratives. He was a key author of the “Nunes Memo,” which alleged bias within the FBI’s Russia probe. Patel also claimed that abuses of federal law enforcement intensified under the Biden administration, accusing the DOJ and FBI of continuing “weaponization” against political opponents.
Adding to the controversy, Patel described discovering a secret “burn bag” room at FBI headquarters filled with sensitive Russia investigation documents that were never destroyed and kept off official blueprints. This hidden stash reportedly included classified annexes to John Durham’s 2023 report, which criticized the FBI’s handling of the Russia inquiry for “confirmation bias” but did not result in convictions.
Patel’s allegations echo claims from other Trump allies, including Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who called the original Russia investigation a “treasonous conspiracy” by Obama-era officials. The Department of Justice has opened a grand jury investigation into these claims and subpoenaed former FBI director James Comey.
While these accusations have been repeatedly denied by former President Obama, Hillary Clinton, and other officials, they continue to fuel partisan divisions over the legitimacy of the FBI’s Russia investigation. Patel’s statements underscore ongoing efforts by Trump loyalists to discredit the probe and portray it as a politically motivated attack rather than a legitimate inquiry into foreign interference.
This latest salvo from Patel serves as a reminder of the deep fractures within the U.S. intelligence and law enforcement communities and the persistent challenges to democratic norms posed by weaponizing federal agencies for political ends. As investigations continue, the public deserves transparency and accountability to ensure the rule of law is upheld — not bent to serve partisan agendas.
