FBI Launches Baseless Leak Probe Against Atlantic Reporter, Flouts First Amendment

The FBI has opened a criminal leak investigation targeting Atlantic journalist Sarah Fitzpatrick over reporting on Director Kash Patel's mysterious absences and drinking, despite no classified information being involved. This move, condemned by press freedom advocates, exposes the bureau’s ongoing pattern of weaponizing federal power to intimidate critics and suppress constitutionally protected journalism.

FBI Launches Baseless Leak Probe Against Atlantic Reporter, Flouts First Amendment

The FBI is once again showing it has no respect for the First Amendment or journalistic independence. According to the Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), the bureau has initiated a criminal leak investigation into Sarah Fitzpatrick of The Atlantic for her reporting on FBI Director Kash Patel’s unexplained absences and alleged drinking habits. Crucially, Fitzpatrick’s reporting did not involve any classified material.

Seth Stern, FPF’s Chief of Advocacy, called the investigation “outrageous,” emphasizing that the probe appears to be little more than an attempt to settle a personal vendetta against critical reporting. Stern noted the absurdity of the investigation, especially given that Patel’s own lawsuit dismissed the sources cited in Fitzpatrick’s article as “sham sources.” If the sources are fake, they cannot have leaked anything.

This is not an isolated incident. Just weeks earlier, the FBI reportedly investigated journalist Elizabeth Williamson after she exposed Patel’s misuse of government resources to cover transportation and security costs for his girlfriend. Both cases reveal a disturbing pattern: the FBI under Patel is using taxpayer-funded resources not to fight crime, but to intimidate and punish journalists who expose misconduct within the bureau’s leadership.

The FBI’s actions represent a blatant disregard for the constitutional protections that safeguard a free press. Instead of focusing on legitimate criminal investigations, the bureau is diverting resources to silence unfavorable coverage of its director. This abuse of power undermines public trust in federal law enforcement and threatens the democratic principle of holding those in power accountable.

As the FBI weaponizes its authority to target journalists, the stakes grow higher for press freedom and government transparency. The public deserves an agency that protects the rule of law—not one that uses its power to shield officials from scrutiny. We will continue to track and expose these abuses as they unfold.
