FBI Raids 22 Minnesota Daycares in Massive $19 Billion Social Services Fraud Probe

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who had previously dismissed fraud investigations targeting Somali-run businesses as “white supremacy” and “scapegoating,” abruptly dropped his re-election bid this January amid the scandal. On Tuesday, he reversed course, publicly supporting the raids and promising accountability. “If you commit fraud in Minnesota you’re going to get caught,” Walz said, emphasizing the importance of joint investigations between state and federal agencies.

Community reactions have been mixed. The Somali ambassador to the UN was linked to a shady healthcare company involved in Medicaid fraud, highlighting the depth of corruption. Meanwhile, reports surfaced that fraudsters used stolen funds to finance luxury lifestyles, including beachside resorts and exotic car rentals.

Local investigations by journalists and activists had earlier raised alarms. YouTuber Nick Shirley’s December 2025 door-to-door checks found several daycares, including the ‘Learing Center,’ empty despite claims of caring for children. The Post’s own visits confirmed irregularities, with neighbors noting the centers were often deserted.

Attempts by the daycare’s management to downplay the allegations were met with skepticism. Ibrahim Ali, claiming to be the manager and son of the owner, blamed a graphic designer for the misspelled sign and argued that Shirley’s visit was mistimed. The sign was corrected within days, and the center was permanently closed shortly after.

This investigation exposes how lax oversight and targeted exploitation of social services programs can drain taxpayer funds on a massive scale. It also reveals the political and racial tensions intertwined with fraud enforcement in Minnesota.
