FBI Targets Journalist in Leak Probe Over Kash Patel Drinking Story
The FBI has reportedly launched a rare criminal leak investigation aimed at the journalist behind a scathing article on FBI chief Kash Patel’s alleged heavy drinking and job instability. This probe, focusing on the reporter rather than government leakers, signals a troubling weaponization of federal power to intimidate the press.
The FBI is reportedly investigating the source of leaks that led to a damning Atlantic article about FBI Director Kash Patel’s excessive drinking habits and the risk of his imminent firing. According to a report from MS Now citing two insiders, the bureau has opened an “insider threat investigation” not against the government officials who allegedly leaked the information, but against Sarah Fitzpatrick, the journalist who authored the piece.
Patel himself has responded with a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic and Fitzpatrick, branding the article a “sweeping, malicious, and defamatory hit piece.” The story, which relied on two dozen anonymous sources, painted a picture of a bureau chief whose personal conduct threatens the integrity of the FBI.
Leak investigations traditionally focus on government employees who disclose sensitive information without authorization. Targeting a journalist for publishing such material is highly unusual and raises serious First Amendment concerns. An FBI spokesperson, Ben Williamson, denied to MS Now that any such investigation was underway, but the report underscores the growing pattern of Kash Patel weaponizing federal agencies to silence critics and undermine accountability.
This move fits a broader trend under Patel’s leadership of loyalty purges and politicization within the FBI, turning it into a tool against political opponents rather than a neutral law enforcement agency. Investigating reporters rather than the officials who leak information is a dangerous escalation that threatens press freedom and democratic transparency.
As the FBI doubles down on intimidating journalists, the public must remain vigilant against these authoritarian tactics designed to shield corrupt officials from scrutiny. We will continue to follow this story closely as it develops.
