Federal Judge Demands ICE Release of 19-Year-Old Nursing Student After Months in Detention
A federal judge has ordered ICE to release Olivia Andre, a 19-year-old nursing student and asylum seeker detained since last November. Her lawyer highlights the harsh conditions and lack of medical care that endangered her health while in custody.
A federal judge has intervened to end the prolonged detention of Olivia Andre, a 19-year-old nursing student from Portland, Maine, ordering Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to release her by May 8. Andre, an asylum seeker from Congo, has been held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas since November, separated from her family who were released earlier this year.
Representative Chellie Pingree announced the ruling, underscoring the injustice of Andre’s detention. Andre’s lawyer, Elora Mukherjee, described the severe toll the detention took on her client’s mental and physical health, citing inadequate access to clean water, palatable food, and necessary medical care. Mukherjee condemned the detention as unnecessary and harmful, emphasizing that Andre and her family should never have been held in these conditions.
Before her arrest, Andre was a first-year nursing student, poised to build a future contributing to her community. Instead, she endured months behind bars in a facility notorious for inhumane conditions and systemic neglect. This case highlights the broader pattern of ICE’s abusive detention practices, especially against vulnerable asylum seekers, and raises urgent questions about oversight and accountability within the immigration enforcement system.
ICE’s detention of Andre reflects a disturbing trend of prolonged incarceration without adequate care, undermining basic human rights and public health. The judge’s order to release her is a crucial victory, but it also shines a spotlight on the countless others still trapped in similar conditions, waiting for justice. We will continue to track and expose these abuses, holding ICE accountable for its treatment of immigrants and asylum seekers.
