Federal Raid on Disney Cruise Ship in San Diego Raises Alarms Over Immigration Enforcement Tactics

Federal agents detained nearly three dozen cruise ship workers, including Disney employees, on suspicion of child pornography offenses during raids at multiple California ports. The aggressive enforcement, which involved handcuffing workers in front of passengers, has sparked outrage and demands for transparency from immigrant rights groups amid broader concerns about Trump-era immigration crackdowns.

Federal Raid on Disney Cruise Ship in San Diego Raises Alarms Over Immigration Enforcement Tactics

Last month, a federal raid on a Disney cruise ship docked in San Diego ended with uniformed Disney crew members reportedly handcuffed with zip ties in front of passengers. Yet weeks later, the exact reasons behind these detentions remain unclear, fueling outrage and calls for answers.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the raids were part of a broader sweep conducted between April 23 and 27, targeting eight cruise ships. The agency said it interviewed 28 individuals and detained 27 on suspicion of handling or viewing child pornography. Those detained included workers from the Philippines, Portugal, and Indonesia. CBP canceled their visas and sent them back to their home countries.

Disney confirmed some of its workers were among those detained and have since been fired. However, immigrant rights group Unión del Barrio condemned the raids as “abductions” without due process, demanding federal agents explain their actions. The group is also trying to ensure the detained individuals’ rights are respected but remains cautious about official statements from ICE and CBP.

The Philippine Consulate General expressed concern over the detention and deportation of Filipino seafarers but declined to provide further details. Other cruise lines, including Holland America owned by Carnival, were reportedly involved, though Carnival did not respond to requests for comment.

This incident is unfolding amid an intensified immigration enforcement campaign under President Donald Trump’s administration. Federal agents have increasingly conducted raids in sensitive locations traditionally avoided, such as schools and hospitals, escalating fears among immigrant communities about human rights violations and erosion of public trust.

The cruise ship raids were linked to “Operation Tidal Wave,” a Homeland Security Investigations effort targeting international crimes. The operation echoes a Florida state-federal crackdown that led to over 10,000 arrests earlier this year.

This latest episode exposes the harsh realities of immigration enforcement tactics under the Trump administration and raises urgent questions about accountability, transparency, and respect for due process—especially when vulnerable immigrant workers are involved.
