Forbes: Professor Luz López Shares Expertise on Care for Pregnant Women in ICE Custody

In a recent* Forbes* article examining how immigration enforcement may be affecting maternal health, Luz Marilis López, a clinical professor at the Boston University School of Social Work, highlighted concerns about the treatment and health risks facing pregnant immigrants.
A new BabyCenter poll of more than 500 pregnant women found that 1 in 5 say recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity has deterred them from seeking prenatal care. Health experts warn that missing prenatal visits can allow serious complications such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, infections, and blood clots to go undetected.
López emphasized that the risks extend beyond delayed care.
“The sanitary conditions at the ICE detention centers and the lack of medical care for pregnant women are also of serious concern,” López told Forbes.
The article also highlights reports that some pregnant immigrants have been detained or separated from their infants, which can disrupt breastfeeding and create health and emotional risks for both mother and child.
