Former ag secretary weighs in on new Dietary Guidelines for Americans

A former USDA secretary says the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans is a mixed bag.

Dan Glickman served as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture from 1995-2001 and says the guidelines should help address chronic diseases in America.

“A lot of these are diet related. We have very high incidence of type 2 diabetes,” he said. “Part of that is we eat a lot of sugar. We have added sugars in all our products. The dietary guidelines try to deal with added sugars and increasing fruits and vegetables as part of our diet.”

He says the guidelines also recommend three servings of dairy per day, which is something he also supports.

However, Glickman tells Brownfield he’s skeptical about Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s views on diet-related issues.

“Because he’s taking a real dagger in the heart of necessary crop inputs like pesticides and herbicides that are necessary to prevent pests and disease. So, it’s complicated.”

Glickman says the U.S. hasn’t been as aggressive as other countries in reducing sugars and carbohydrates in daily diets, but the new guidelines are a step in the right direction.
