Former FBI Director James Comey Indicted Again in Politically Charged DOJ Case

The United States Department of Justice has once again indicted former FBI Director James Comey, this time over a social media post that prosecutors claim constituted a threat against President Donald Trump. The indictment, announced Tuesday, comes on the heels of a previous criminal case against Comey that collapsed last year after a judge ruled the prosecutor’s appointment was unlawful.

Comey, who led the FBI’s investigation into possible coordination between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia, has long been targeted by Trump’s calls for prosecution. The latest charges stem from a photo Comey posted nearly a year ago showing seashells arranged in the shape of “86 47.” While “86” is restaurant slang for throwing something out, it can also mean “kill,” and Trump is the 47th president, prompting prosecutors to allege the post was a veiled threat.

The indictment accuses Comey of “knowingly and willfully” threatening to “take the life of, and to inflict bodily harm upon” the president and transmitting that threat across state lines. However, prosecutors provide no direct evidence that Comey intended violence. Instead, they argue that a “reasonable recipient” familiar with context would interpret the message as threatening.

Comey has denied any violent intent, stating he was unaware that some might associate the numbers with violence and removed the post once he learned of the interpretation. He was also interviewed by the Secret Service.

This move fits a disturbing pattern of the Trump administration and its allies weaponizing the Justice Department to target political opponents. Last year’s failed indictment against Comey for allegedly lying to Congress was dismissed on procedural grounds, and similar politically charged charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James were dropped. Meanwhile, Trump himself pressured then-Attorney General Pam Bondi to pursue indictments against Comey, James, and other political adversaries.

The Justice Department is also investigating former CIA Director John Brennan, another key figure in the Russia probe, who denies wrongdoing.

This latest indictment raises urgent questions about the politicization of America’s justice system and the erosion of democratic norms under the Trump administration. We must remain vigilant against the abuse of legal institutions to settle political scores rather than uphold justice.
