Four New Jersey Residents Charged with Illegal Voting in Multiple Federal Elections

Four New Jersey residents face federal charges for illegally casting ballots in federal elections, according to an announcement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The individuals were not U.S. citizens when they registered to vote and participated in elections spanning two presidential cycles and a midterm between 2020 and 2024.

The charges include illegal voting in a federal election, making false statements on citizenship applications, and unlawful procurement of naturalization. Prosecutors allege the defendants falsely claimed on their naturalization forms that they had never voted or registered to vote in a federal election.

U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer, who took office in March after a contentious leadership dispute, emphasized his office’s “commitment to protecting the integrity of our election system.” Last year, Frazer’s office created a task force targeting election offenses such as voter registration fraud, multiple voting, and voting by non-citizens.

This case surfaces amid a persistent wave of social media claims and political rhetoric, largely fueled by former President Donald Trump and his allies, alleging widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election and beyond. However, election officials—both current and former—insist such fraud is isolated and uncommon. They cite the decentralized structure of U.S. elections, with thousands of independent jurisdictions, as a key safeguard against large-scale vote-rigging schemes.

While these charges represent serious violations, they do not support the broad claims of systemic fraud that have been used to justify restrictive voting laws and undermine confidence in democratic processes. Instead, they highlight the importance of vigilance and accountability in election administration without feeding into unfounded conspiracy narratives.
