Fulton County Fights Back Against Trump’s Intimidation Campaign Targeting Election Workers
Fulton County, Georgia, is pushing back hard against a Trump administration subpoena demanding personal data of 2020 election workers, citing fears of harassment and threats fueled by baseless fraud claims. This legal battle exposes the ongoing weaponization of racist conspiracy theories aimed at intimidating Black election officials and undermining democracy.
At the heart of Donald Trump’s racist and baseless 2020 election fraud conspiracy theories is Fulton County, Georgia — a majority-Black area where Trump’s lies ignited threats and harassment against election workers like Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss. These workers endured death threats and intimidation campaigns eerily reminiscent of Jim Crow-era white supremacist tactics.
Now, Fulton County is taking a stand to protect its election officials from a new wave of intimidation. On Thursday, the county filed a motion to quash a sweeping grand jury subpoena issued by the Trump administration demanding the names and personal information of thousands of election workers and volunteers who served during the 2020 general election.
The county’s legal filing calls the subpoena “unprecedented and harassing,” emphasizing that it seeks “sensitive personal information” that could expose workers to renewed threats amid ongoing disinformation campaigns. The move is a direct response to efforts by Trump and his allies to weaponize false claims of voter fraud as a pretext to intimidate and silence those who ran fair elections in communities of color.
Legal experts, including MS NOW contributor Adam Klasfeld, have highlighted the racist underpinnings of Trump’s election fraud allegations, which disproportionately targeted Black voters and election officials in Fulton County. Freeman and Moss testified before the House Jan. 6 Committee about the harassment and death threats they faced after Trump’s defeat, underscoring the real-world dangers of election denialism.
This subpoena battle is more than a legal dispute. It’s a frontline in the ongoing fight against authoritarian tactics designed to undermine democratic processes and punish those who uphold them. Fulton County’s resistance is a crucial stand for election integrity and the safety of election workers nationwide.
We will be watching closely as this case unfolds, shining a light on attempts to weaponize government power to intimidate and suppress democratic participation. Trump’s war on democracy did not end with the 2020 election — Fulton County is proving that the fight to hold power accountable continues.
