Georgia’s GOP Election Law Chaos: Fueled by Trump Lies, Left Unfunded and Unfixed
Georgia Republicans invented a fake election fraud crisis to justify new voting rules, then failed to fund or implement those rules—leaving the state in election chaos just months before midterms. Now lawmakers refuse to fix their mess, risking court battles and further undermining trust in democracy.
Georgia’s Republican legislators are caught in a self-inflicted election law nightmare, all because they refuse to confront a simple truth: Donald Trump lost the 2020 election in their state. Instead, they’ve doubled down on his baseless claims of fraud, creating a cascade of problems that now threaten the integrity of upcoming elections.
In 2020, Trump lost Georgia fair and square. But like clockwork, he insists he won—even in states like California where he lost by huge margins. This delusion has infected Georgia’s GOP so deeply that two years ago they passed a law mandating a new, untested system for casting and counting ballots. Their stated goal? To prevent the fraud that never happened.
The catch? Despite setting a hard deadline this summer to have the new system ready for midterms, Georgia Republicans never allocated the funds needed to buy new voting machines or train election workers. Now, with less than three months left, the state is nowhere near ready.
It gets worse. During this year’s legislative session, lawmakers had plenty of time to fix the problem: pass a bill to delay the deadline and approve the funding. But they did nothing. They created a problem out of thin air, failed to solve it, and then refused to do anything about the consequences.
House and Senate leaders, along with Governor Brian Kemp, say they might call a special session to address the issue before the deadline. Or maybe not. That “maybe not” means they’re willing to let the courts sort out the chaos they caused, further eroding public confidence in Georgia’s elections.
This isn’t just incompetence. It’s a dangerous political game that sacrifices democratic stability on the altar of Trump’s lies. Georgia’s GOP is now holding the state hostage to a delusion, risking even greater disorder and mistrust in the electoral process.
If they truly cared about election integrity, they’d act now. Instead, they’re choosing chaos—and the rest of us will pay the price.
