Georgia’s Next Top Election Official Race Haunted by 2020 Election Lies

The 2020 election, which saw Joe Biden narrowly flip Georgia for the first time in decades, remains the toxic backdrop to the battle for Georgia’s next secretary of state. With current Secretary Brad Raffensperger running for governor, eight candidates are vying to oversee the state’s elections, corporate filings, and professional licenses. But rather than focusing on forward-looking election reforms, much of the Republican field clings to debunked claims of widespread fraud.

At a recent Republican primary debate, candidates Vernon Jones, Kelvin King, Ted Metz, and Gabriel Sterling sparred over election integrity, with Jones openly endorsing the “Stop the Steal” movement and calling for a switch to paper ballots to “secure” future elections. Metz went further, claiming the 2020 election “was really no election” due to alleged federal law violations. Sterling stood out as the lone voice defending the legitimacy of Georgia’s 2020 results, pointing to multiple recounts and investigations that confirmed the outcome.

These false narratives are more than political theater—they threaten to erode public trust in democracy and justify restrictive voting laws. Jones and King even clashed over alleged no-bid state contracts, adding personal drama to the debate.

On the Democratic side, candidates like Fulton County Commissioner Dana Barrett and Judge Penny Brown Reynolds emphasized transparent, auditable elections with hybrid voting systems that combine machine counting with paper verification. Barrett also condemned the FBI’s raid on the Fulton County election hub as a politically motivated attempt at federal election takeover.

Georgia’s election system remains under pressure from partisan forces seeking to rewrite history and control future outcomes. The secretary of state’s office will be a critical front line in this ongoing battle for electoral integrity. Voters should be wary of candidates who peddle lies about 2020 instead of focusing on protecting and improving democracy in Georgia.
