Germany Slams Iran’s Missile Strikes on UAE Amid Fragile Ceasefire
Germany, along with other European leaders, has condemned Iran’s recent missile and drone attacks on the UAE, calling them a blatant violation of international law and a threat to regional stability. Meanwhile, Tehran remains silent on the attacks as US President Trump downplays the aggression, exposing the administration’s reckless approach to escalating Middle East tensions.
Germany has joined a chorus of European condemnation following Iran’s missile and drone strikes on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on May 4, the first such attacks since a fragile ceasefire took effect in early April. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called the attacks “strongly condemnable,” urging Tehran to return to negotiations and warning against using the Strait of Hormuz as a geopolitical weapon.
The UAE Defense Ministry reported intercepting a barrage of 12 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles, and four drones targeting its oil infrastructure, signaling a dangerous escalation in the ongoing Iran conflict. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the strikes as “vicious” and a clear breach of international law. Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer and France’s President Emmanuel Macron echoed these calls for de-escalation and renewed diplomatic efforts.
Tehran has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the attacks. Iranian state media quoted an anonymous military official blaming “US military adventurism” for provoking the incident, a thinly veiled reference to President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of a US-led initiative to escort merchant vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi insisted there is “no military solution” to the crisis and praised Pakistan’s mediation efforts.
Despite mounting regional tensions, Trump sought to downplay the severity of the attacks, releasing scant details about an upcoming Pentagon press conference and framing the US naval escort mission as a stabilizing effort. This posture reflects the Trump administration’s pattern of using foreign conflicts as distractions from domestic scandals while risking further destabilization in a volatile region.
The fragile ceasefire brokered in April now appears increasingly tenuous, with diplomatic talks between the US and Iran stalled and no clear path to lasting peace. Germany’s call for Iran to “stop holding the region and the world hostage” underscores the urgent need for accountability and a genuine commitment to diplomacy — something the Trump administration has repeatedly failed to deliver.
